Buhari’s Reputation As A Democrat Won’t Change If He Doesn’t Sign Electoral Bill – Femi Adesina

President Buhari’s reputation as a democrat, according to presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina, will not be tarnished if he does not sign the newly passed modified electoral bill.

This comes in the wake the controversy surrounding the bill’s inclusion of a direct primary for political parties.

In an interview with Channels Television, Adesina responded to the situation by describing Buhari as “someone who wants to leave clean elections for Nigeria,” regardless of whether the electoral act is signed or not.

He said;

“In terms of his image for democratic value, that image is made already. It is almost cast in concrete. You will find that one election after the other has been better under President Buhari.

“Under President Buhari, the governing party has lost — states, legislative seats and so many elections.

“It didn’t used to be. It used to be that whichever party was in power won all elections before by hook or crook; not under President Buhari.

“So, his reputation as somebody who wants to leave clean elections for Nigeria has already been made whether the electoral act is signed or not. It doesn’t distract from that reputation.”

In other news, Buba Galadima, a former ally of President Buhari, has criticized the Federal Government’s labeling of bandits as terrorists, calling it a waste of time.

The operations of the Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda bandit gangs were labeled acts of terrorism by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal high court in Abuja last week. Here’s where you can learn more.

Galadima, in an interview with Vanguard, reacted to this situation by saying:

”In all honesty, don’t you think it is a waste of time? There are implications for this declaration. Those who declared these bandits as illegal or outlaws suggest that they know who the bandits are and have not done anything about them. For me, it’s a waste of time and a show of ignorance on the part of those who did that because I don’t know who answers bandits, whether they have address or location in such a manner that when they do banditry, you know where you can arrest them.

The highest the authorities could have done is to propagate an act or law saying that anyone caught doing banditry would face public execution or firing squad or whatever. But you can’t declare somebody without an address, without name an outlaw. You can only deal with the action. The action of banditry can be tackled. If you catch somebody in the act, you can deal with the person, but not outlaw the person because the people are faceless. If you outlaw bandits, you are telling us that all along you know who they are, you have been lying and you are in synergy with them.”
